Who Are Southend Puffers Club?
Formed in May 2012 by Annie Broad assisted by Jan Morrison, The Puffers Club is a greatly welcomed service for sufferers of respiratory illnesses such as COPD, a debilitating breathing disorder. After attending a pulmonary rehabilitation course run by Southend University Hospital Annie felt that there was a need for an exercise class specifically for people who had breathing difficulties and who did not feel they fitted into the conventional gym system. And so the Puffers were born. They meet every Tuesday between 12.45 and 2.30 pm At Ambleside Social Club, Ambleside Drive, Southend SS1 2UP.

Classes enable a range of gentle exercises; Sitting – to improve breathing and mobility to help prevent falls. Strengthening – upper and lower body exercises enabling mobility and balance using resistance bands to gradually improve muscle strength needed when climbing stairs, carrying shopping and enjoying some gardening. Aerobic – Using larger muscle groups and working your heart and lungs, improving their endurance by working your respiratory muscles. This helps the body to use oxygen more efficiently and, with time, can improve breathing.
Kick off is 11am, refreshments will be available and there will be a few surprises on the day along with a raffle and bucket shake so remember all that loose change! Programmes available for 50p on the day.
